Scale · AI Search / GEO

The answer gets read. The citation gets clicked.

A growing share of searches now end in an AI answer rather than a click. You can't rank in an answer — you get cited in one. That depends on being quotable, structured, corroborated elsewhere, and unambiguous about who you are.

Citation tracking across engines Entity clarity first Works with classic SEO, not instead
Sound familiar

You're probably here for one of these.

Three patterns account for most of the AI search work we take on. If one of them is yours, the audit will confirm it in a fortnight.

Impressions are up, clicks are down.

The classic AI Overview signature: you're being shown inside the answer without earning the click. The response is to be the cited source rather than the summarised one.

Citation capture
ChatGPT recommends competitors, not us.

Models draw on what's said about you across the web, not what you say about yourself. Absent third-party corroboration, you don't come to mind.

Corroboration build
AI describes our product wrongly.

Ambiguous entity signals. When your own site doesn't state plainly what you are and who you serve, models infer it from whoever mentions you.

Entity correction
How we run it

What actually happens, and when.

Sequenced deliberately — each phase depends on the one before it. Numbering here means order, not decoration.

PHASE 01

Baseline

Week 1–3
  • Prompt set built from how buyers actually ask, across four engines
  • Current citation and mention rate measured per engine
  • Competitor share of answer recorded for the same prompts
  • Entity audit: what your site, schema and third parties say you are
PHASE 02

Optimise

Week 4–10
  • Content restructured for extractability — direct answers, then depth
  • Definitional and comparison content written to be quotable
  • Entity graph tightened across schema, About page and profiles
  • Corroboration built through mentions on sources models already trust
PHASE 03

Track

Ongoing
  • Weekly re-run of the prompt set with citation deltas logged
  • AI referral traffic segmented in GA4 by engine
  • Coverage extended as new engines and answer surfaces appear
  • Findings fed back into classic SEO, since the overlap is large
What good looks like

The targets we work to.

Benchmarks, not promises. Your starting point decides how far and how fast — the audit gives you both numbers before you commit to anything.

Weekly
Citation tracking cadence

Answers change constantly; a one-off snapshot tells you nothing.

4
Engines monitored

AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, on the same prompt set.

Answer-first
Content structure

Direct answer in the opening lines, then the depth that earns the citation.

Benchmarks reflect the standards we work to, not guaranteed outcomes.

Common questions

AI Search / GEO, answered straight.

Is GEO actually different from SEO?

Mostly overlapping. Being crawlable, credible and clearly structured helps in both. The genuine differences are optimising for extractable passages rather than whole-page relevance, and caring about mentions on third-party sources even when they don't link.

Can we track whether ChatGPT recommends us?

Yes, by running a fixed prompt set on a schedule and recording whether you're named or cited. It isn't a rank tracker — responses vary between runs and users — so we track a rate over time rather than a position.

Does blocking AI crawlers hurt us?

It removes you from the answers those systems generate. Blocking GPTBot means ChatGPT can't cite you, and if your competitors allow it they get the mention. It's a genuine trade-off between content protection and visibility, and worth deciding deliberately rather than by default robots.txt.

Is this worth investing in yet?

If your impressions are rising while clicks fall, it's already affecting you. For most businesses it's a meaningful share of the work rather than a replacement for classic SEO — the same content and authority work serves both, which is why we run them together.
