// Schema Markup Explained
WHAT IS SCHEMA MARKUP AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Schema markup (structured data) is code that tells Google exactly what your content is — an article, a product, a FAQ, a business. When Google understands your content's structure, it displays enhanced search results called rich results.
Rich results are visually enhanced SERP listings: review stars, price and availability, FAQ dropdowns that expand directly in Google results, How-To steps with images, breadcrumb navigation. They dramatically increase click-through rates without changing ranking position.
Schema also plays a critical role in AI search citations. Google's AI Overviews and engines like ChatGPT preferentially cite sources with clear structured data, author entity markup, and FAQPage schema — treating them as more trustworthy, well-organised sources.
