Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) Services

The answer gets read. The citation gets clicked. Answer engine optimization is the work of making your page the one that gets lifted, quoted and credited — instead of the one summarized without attribution.

You're probably here for one of these.

Three patterns account for most of the answer engine optimization work we take on. If one of them is yours, the audit will confirm it in about two weeks.

Impressions are up, clicks are down.

The classic AI Overview signature. You're being shown inside the answer without earning the click. The response is to become the cited source rather than the summarized one.

Citation capture
We rank third and a competitor owns the snippet.

Position and answer slot are decided separately. A page ranking below you can still hold the snippet if its passage is cleaner, shorter and more directly phrased than yours.

Passage rewrite
Our best pages answer nothing directly.

Long preambles, buried conclusions, definitions that arrive in paragraph six. Nothing is extractable, so nothing gets extracted — however good the underlying content is.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search and AI systems can lift a clean, correct passage from it and display that passage as the answer. It targets the answer surfaces themselves — Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice results — rather than the ten blue links beneath them.

The shift it responds to is simple. A growing share of searches now resolve above the results, inside a box the searcher reads without clicking. If your page is not the source of that box, the click goes to whoever is — or nowhere at all.

Almost all of the work happens on your own site, which is what makes AEO the faster of the two AI search disciplines. You are not waiting on third parties to mention you. You are rewriting pages that already rank so a machine can quote them without ambiguity: the direct answer in the opening lines, the depth underneath, and structured data confirming what each section is.

Terminology

AEO, GEO and SEO: what actually differs.

The three overlap more than the acronyms suggest. The differences that matter are what you optimize and what you measure.

SEO

Earning a ranked position for a query. Optimizes whole-page relevance, technical health and earned links. Measured in positions, clicks and conversions.

Position
AEO

Owning the answer slot for a specific question — AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask. Optimizes passage extractability and structure. Measured in slots held.

Slot
GEO

Being the brand a model names when someone asks for options. Optimizes entity clarity and third-party corroboration. Measured in citation and mention rate.

Mention

If your problem is that AI recommends competitors when buyers ask for options, start with generative engine optimization instead. Most engagements end up running both.

Scope

What answer engine optimization services include.

Six workstreams. Not every engagement needs all six — the baseline decides which ones carry weight for you.

Question inventory

Every question your buyers ask that currently triggers an answer surface, mapped to the page that should own it and to whoever owns it today.

Measurement
Passage rewriting

Answer-first restructuring of pages that already rank: the direct answer in the opening 40 to 60 words, then the depth that justifies it. Usually the highest-return work on the list.

On-site
Structured data

FAQPage, HowTo, Article and Product schema that tells a parser what each block is, validated rather than assumed. Wrong schema is worse than none.

Technical
Heading architecture

Descriptive, question-shaped H2s with stable anchor IDs — the structure that earns sub-links inside a result and gives a model clean section boundaries to quote from.

Structure
Zero-click strategy

Deciding which questions are worth owning even without a click, and which to skip because the answer ends the journey. Not every snippet is worth having.

Strategy
Slot tracking

Weekly monitoring of which answer slots you hold and lose, plus GA4 segmentation so you can see what the retained clicks are actually worth.

Reporting
How we run it

What actually happens, and when.

Sequenced deliberately — each phase depends on the one before it. Numbering here means order, not decoration.

PHASE 01

Baseline

Week 1–3
  • Question inventory built from Search Console, People Also Ask and buyer language
  • Current answer slots held and lost recorded per query
  • Competitor slot ownership mapped on the same question set
  • Impressions-versus-clicks divergence quantified page by page
PHASE 02

Restructure

Week 4–10
  • Pages already ranking on page one rewritten answer-first
  • Question-shaped headings and stable anchor IDs deployed
  • FAQ, HowTo and Article schema added and validated
  • Gaps filled where no page yet exists for a question worth owning
PHASE 03

Measure

Ongoing
  • Weekly slot tracking with wins and losses logged per query
  • Click-through recovery measured against the baseline divergence
  • Coverage extended as new answer surfaces appear
  • Findings fed back into content strategy and technical SEO
What good looks like

The standards we work to.

Benchmarks, not promises. Your starting point decides how far and how fast — the audit gives you both numbers before you commit to anything.

40–60
Words in the direct answer

Long enough to be complete, short enough to be lifted whole. Most extracted passages sit in this band.

Weekly
Slot tracking cadence

Answer surfaces appear and vanish for the same query. Monthly checks miss most of what happened.

Page one
Eligibility threshold

Pages generally need to rank on the first page before they're eligible to be quoted. AEO builds on SEO, not around it.

Benchmarks reflect the standards we work to, not guaranteed outcomes. No agency can guarantee a featured snippet or an AI Overview citation.

Common questions

Answer engine optimization, answered straight.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that search and AI systems can lift a clean, correct passage from it and show that passage as the answer. It targets the answer surfaces themselves — Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice results — rather than the ten blue links beneath them.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes a whole page for relevance to a query and is measured in positions. AEO optimizes individual passages for extraction and is measured in answer slots held. The two share a foundation, since a page usually has to rank on the first page before it is eligible to be quoted, which is why AEO sits on top of technical SEO rather than replacing it.

How is AEO different from generative engine optimization?

AEO is about owning the answer to a specific question. GEO is about being the brand a model names when someone asks for options or recommendations. AEO is largely a content structure problem you solve on your own site; GEO is a brand corroboration problem you solve across the wider web. Many engagements need both.

Our impressions are rising but clicks are falling. Is that AEO?

It is the most common signature of answer surfaces taking the click. You are being shown inside the answer without being the cited source, or the answer resolves the query completely so no click follows. The response is to become the attributed source and to target questions where the searcher still needs to visit a page to act.

Can you guarantee a featured snippet or AI Overview placement?

No, and anyone who does is guessing. Answer surfaces are volatile, they appear and disappear for the same query, and Google changes eligibility without notice. What we can do is make your pages structurally eligible, track which slots you hold week to week, and report the trend honestly.

How long does answer engine optimization take?

Restructuring existing pages that already rank on page one can win slots within weeks, because the content is already eligible and only the format is wrong. Pages that do not yet rank need the underlying SEO work first, which typically means three to six months before AEO changes anything.
