// International SEO Explained
WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL SEO AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
International SEO is the process of optimising your website so Google serves the right version of your content to users in the right country — and ranks it for market-specific search terms. It goes well beyond translation: search behaviour, terminology, and competition levels differ significantly across English-speaking markets.
If you're targeting US and UK audiences with the same pages, you're likely underperforming in both. American and British English differences, distinct competitor landscapes, and separate Search Console properties all mean your US-optimised content isn't optimal for UK search — and vice versa.
The technical foundation of international SEO is hreflang — the HTML tag that tells Google which page to serve to users in which country. Implemented incorrectly (extremely common), hreflang causes duplicate content issues, index bloat, and missed rankings across all markets simultaneously.
